Domain 4 of 9
place.
Where you'll actually live, and the question behind it.
Place is where you'll actually live, and the larger question hiding inside it: stay or go, and why. The family house that fit a family of five is a different proposition for one or two people in their seventies. The stairs that were nothing become something. The town built around a job loosens its hold.
The decision carries more than logistics. Where you live shapes who you see, how independent you stay, what you can manage and for how long. Downsizing, relocating closer to children, aging in a place adapted to a changing body, or simply staying put with eyes open — each is a real choice, and leaving it permanently open is itself a choice, usually not the best one.
Bearings asks whether you've genuinely weighed where you'll live for the next stretch, or whether you're defaulting to inertia because the conversation is hard.
Leaving it permanently open is itself a choice — usually not the best one.
What the assessment asks.
A few of the 4 questions that surface this domain — less about whether you've done a task, more about whether you've reached some footing.
- —I know where I want to live during retirement.
- —Have you evaluated whether your current home will work for you as you age?
- —My home is paid for, or I have a clear plan to pay it off before retirement.
- —I'm comfortable with the cost and effort of maintaining my home long-term.
