Meaning is the domain underneath all the others — the question of what it's for, which work answered for so long by simply being there to do. For thirty years, getting up and going somewhere that needed you was its own answer. Take that away and the question returns, often louder than people expect.
This isn't necessarily a crisis, though for some it is. More often it's a slow recalibration: figuring out what you're retiring toward rather than only what you're retiring from, finding the thing that makes the years feel like they mattered, working out who you are without the title that used to introduce you.
